Congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy! What a special time in your life. The life growing inside of you makes you feel all sorts of things, all the way from anxious to excitement. And with those feelings comes a million different thoughts. What will the baby look like? What diaper should I use? How will my pets handle a new life in the house? Will I get enough sleep at night? Will the baby sleep at night? Where will the baby sleep?
The last question on that list is the most fun to answer. Through all your planning for your new bundle of joy, it can be very exciting to plan out baby’s nursery. What will it look like? Will you follow a theme? What pieces will you include? What are some essential items that your baby will need to have?
1. A Place to Sleep
Possibly the most important item to include in any nursery is a place to sleep. After all, your little bundle will be doing a lot of sleeping and what better place to do that than in a baby pram!
Along with a pram, you will need sheets, a mattress, and a mattress protector for all those late night spit up and diaper accidents.
2. Blackout Curtains
While we are talking about sleeping habits, you will want to invest in some good quality curtains. Blackout curtains are wonderful for keeping light out of the room so that baby can sleep better. A darkened room will help promote longer periods of rest, something that both you and baby will appreciate!
3. A Changing Table
While you may not need a traditional changing table, you will appreciate having somewhere to change the baby that does not require you to sit on the floor, especially while you are recovering from childbirth. Whether you go the traditional route or use a table or dresser, you will want to make sure you have a soft, safe space to lay baby down while changing, as well as a space to store all the essentials, including diapers, wipes, and diaper rash cream.
4. A dresser
Small as they may be, babies tend to end up having a lot of stuff. You will want to buy some things, and every one of your family members will want to too, as well as some of your friends. Having a dresser to keep all of those cute little clothes in will definitely come in handy.
5. A Hamper
Somewhere to put your baby’s dirty clothes will make it much easier for you when it comes time to wash them all! There are many options available, from a short laundry basket to a tall hamper with a lid, it really just depends on your personal preference. However, you may want to keep in mind that when your baby is older, everything becomes something to climb on!
6. A Bookshelf
While we are talking about storage, having a bookshelf or something similar will be very useful for storing all of those toys and other items your baby will accumulate will help to keep the nursery looking clean.
There is not much point in having a spot to store toys if you do not have any! While your baby will not need many toys right away, they grow fast and before you know it they will want to explore the world around them. Having some toys on hand will help kickstart that curiosity.
8. A play mat
Whether you play with your baby on a blanket or you choose to purchase a mat that comes with toys overhead, you will enjoy having a space to keep your baby entertained.
9. A space for feeding
Having a space somewhere in the room for feedings will be useful for you when your baby wakes up in the middle of the night. This can be anything from a rocker to a cushy chair to a comfortable pile of pillows on the floor. Whatever you choose, you will want it to be a space where you can sit and feed your baby in comfort.
10. A nightlight
For the first year or two, this light will be more for you than your baby. A nightlight will help you to see during night time wakings without having to turn on any brighter lights, which could help your baby go back to sleep faster.
