10 Moving House Checklist

Moving can be one of the most stressful times in a person’s life. Luckily, there are steps that can be taken to ensure that the move goes as smoothly and trouble free as possible.

If you’re preparing to move in the near future, follow this checklist of 10 essential tips and set yourself up for an efficient experience.

1. Forward Your Mail Delivery

One of the first steps to take when preparing to move is to have your mail forwarded to your new address. Head into your local post office or go online and set up the forwarding order. You can date it to reflect any date in the future that you would like it to take effect.

2. Start Packing as Early as Possible

To avoid becoming overwhelmed with packing up your entire home, start the process as early as possible. Set a goal for yourself of packing up one box or one area of the home at a time. Before you know it, the whole house will be packed and ready to go.

3. Get the Family Involved

Family members of all ages can be involved in the packing and moving process. Children may be especially unsettled when it comes time to move, so giving them the opportunity to help pack up their belongings, put the boxes in the moving truck and help to unload them into their new home can give them a sense of ownership of the whole experience.

4. Transfer Your Television Provider

In order to avoid any disruption in your service, contact your television provider to have your service transferred to the new home. If you will require TV Antenna Installation, reach out to a professional to ensure that the job is done correctly and your television picture will be crystal clear.

5. Call Your Utility Companies

Let your oil, gas and electric companies know about your upcoming move. They will be able to walk you through the process of changing your address and getting your service all set up at your new home.

6. Declutter Your Move

Packing for a move is the ideal time to declutter! As you prepare and work on packing, do so with a mindset of clearing out. Keep a box nearby to collect items that you want to donate and take those donations to your local charity center as quickly as possible.

7. Shop Around for Discount and Deals

You will likely be needing moving boxes, a moving truck rental and/or a moving company. Take the time in advance to look for deals and discounts from local companies that you can take advantage of when they arise.

8. Prepare Your Pets

Moving with pets can be challenging, but if you take the proper steps it will go off without a hitch. Make sure that you have the proper traveling equipment: a carrier for cats and other small animals and a collar, leash and harness for dogs. Create a folder with your pets’ documents, being sure to include proof of vaccinations and licenses. If any of those are missing, contact your vet for a replacement document.

9. Compile Address Change Paperwork

In addition to placing a forwarding order with the postal service, start doing any address change paperwork that you can now. Inform your employer, magazine subscriptions, health insurance company and the like of the upcoming change.

10. Prepare to Enjoy Your New Home

Before making the final move, take some time to explore your new neighborhood. You’ll be looking forward to the move even more when you’ve already found a new favorite coffee shop, book store and local park.

Taking the time to go over these checklist points will result in a move that is as pleasant an experience as possible. Give yourself the time needed to pack and move in a planned and efficient manner. Being prepared is truly the key to making this a positive transition in your life. Best wishes on your new home!
