Autumn has arrived! It’s the best time of year: a time for knitwear, comfort food, and of course, pumpkin spice lattes.
It’s normal to spend more time indoors at this time of year, but lower temperatures and shorter days needn’t stop you from enjoying your outdoor space. You might need to layer up to keep warm, but going outside is one of the great joys of autumn: it’s always nice to feel the crisp air on your face and breathe in the unique scents of the season.
And if you have a deck in your back garden, you’re especially lucky. A deck isn’t just the perfect place to perch and drink in the beauty of autumn—it’s also an opportunity to flex your creative muscles and do a bit of seasonal decorating.
If you’d like to dress up your deck for autumn, here are a few suggestions to get your inspiration cooking like a homemade apple pie:
Light up the dark
The evenings are getting darker, so you may want to consider adding some lights to your garden deck. This will give the space a welcoming ambience AND help you to stay safe when moving around—trips and falls are more easily avoided when you can see where you’re walking!
There are multiple ways to add extra light to your deck. Some decking suppliers provide LED deck lights that are built into the boards themselves, but if you don’t have these, you could instead string some fairy lights along the length of your deck handrail, or invest in some attractive outdoor lighting products to complement your deck design.
Decorate your deck with autumn foliage
Autumn wouldn’t be autumn without its colourful foliage—who doesn’t get a thrill from seeing a hillside covered in those glorious reds, yellows and oranges?
If you’re sprucing up your deck for autumn, fallen leaves can bring a bit of natural beauty to the table. Dried leaves can be turned into wreaths, incorporated into flower arrangements, and utilised in all sorts of other decorative touches. Get creative!
Pine cones are another evocative symbol of autumn, and you can get all sorts of different flowers to fit that red, orange and gold colour palette.
Pumpkins!
Pumpkins aren’t just for Halloween. They’re omnipresent throughout the autumn months—the aforementioned pumpkin spice lattes are just the tip of the iceberg! There’s also pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, pumpkin hummus, pumpkin spice liqueurs, pumpkin spice breakfast cereals…the list goes on.
And there’s no reason why you can’t include a few plump orange pumpkins in your autumn deck decor. No need to carve faces in them—just place a few pumpkins around the perimeter of your deck, and voilà: instant autumn vibes!
Decorating your deck for autumn gives you and your family a lovely place to sit—perhaps with a hot drink, pumpkin spice or otherwise—and enjoy this magical season in all its splendour. We all love plonking ourselves down on the sofa of a chilly October evening and sticking a movie on, but remember, your outdoor space can still be a source of great joy even now that summer has ended!
