The most wonderful time of the year is almost here! As the days become shorter and the nights become colder, it’s never too early to catch on the Christmas cheer and add new decorations to your home. Aside from putting up the classic Christmas tree, there are other ways you can decorate your home and make it Christmas-ready:
1. Pick your color
Don’t you think it’s time to let go of the traditional red and green colors? Most people stick with the basics – white, gold, red, and green – but life’s too short not to mix things up a little bit. Choosing your favorite color scheme is the foundation of all your Christmas décor and it’s what makes everything look so magical.
While most Christmas decorations are sold in traditional colors, this shouldn’t stop you from choosing bolder color options. Here are other Christmas color schemes you can try on this December:
- White and brown with silver accents
- Green, blue, and silver
- Green, white, and brown
- Pink and red
- Blue and white
- Red and tan
- Pink and green
- Teal, white, and cranberry
- Why stop there when you can celebrate Christmas with rainbow colors?
2. Illuminate your home with Christmas lights.
When putting up Christmas decorations, you can never have too many Christmas lights. They transform your entire house and make you instantly feel the holiday spirit. Fairy lights make your home look more beautiful and festive.
You can, wrap them around the Christmas trees, line them on your windows, or hang them from the ceiling. You can also use them to outline your house’s exterior and your yard! Put Christmas lights on your plants, trees, and shrubs to make your house look better lit. Just a quick tip before you put lights on your garden or yard: make sure your plants, trees, and shrubs are perfectly trimmed to make it nicer to look at.
3. Add an advent wreath on your front door.
Another popular Christmas decoration is the classic wreath. It’s more than just a simple décor, a wreath actually symbolizes eternity and it has no beginning or no end, hence the circular shape. Its traditional green color represents everlasting life and growth.
You can place wreaths in any part of your house but I personally think it looks better when you hang it on your front door. It will be the first thing your family and friend will see before they enter your home, so having an elegant-looking wreath sets the tone and atmosphere for your house.
You can either go for a real or artificial wreath. For artificial ones, you can easily store them and use them next year. Natural ones, on the other hand, look better and smell better (pine and holly scent) but you won’t be able to use them the second time around. If you want you can add wreaths to all of your doors as well.
4. Make it smell like Christmas with holiday-scented candles.
Holiday-scented candles take Christmas feels on a whole new level. The classic scent of pine, cinnamon, peppermint, and berries instantly make you feel nostalgic. You can place candles on every table or near the windows or you can put all your candles in one place for a dramatic and stylish effect.
Here are some of the scented candles you’d want to snag for the holiday season:
- Twisted Peppermint by Bath and Body Works
- Sparkling Cinnamon by Yankee Candle
- Frasier Fir by Thymes
- Balsam and Cedar by Illume Candles
- Sugar Cookie Candle by Nest
- Red Currant and Cranberry Botanical Garden by Bloomingdale’s
- Portable Fireplace by Amazon
5. Create your own DIY Christmas decorations.
Buying new Christmas decorations every year can be expensive. Other than reusing your past decors, you can create new ones by yourself or with your friends and family! It can be as simple as making candy canes you can hang on the tree to sewing Christmas socks. Another great way to decorate your home is through your table setting. You can use Christmas-themed dishes and utensils, add tabletop Christmas décor, and even turn table napkins into pinecones or Christmas trees. Whatever the case, DIY decorations will add a personal touch to your home.

Showcase your hard work by displaying all your decorations on tables, staircases, and walls. Make it a fun activity you can do with your kids or your entire family.
Decorating your house for the holidays doesn’t have to be a chore. Make it fun and exciting! With the right Christmas decorations and a whole lot of holiday cheer, you can transform your home into a true winter wonderland without spending too much cash, time, and effort.
